Margaret (Tidball) Lyon Reno, age 105, passed away on September 13, 2021. She was born June 13, 1916 in Faith, SD to Watson H Tidball and Anna (Paulson) Tidball. She was the oldest of 8 children and grew up along Black Horse Creek in southwest Corson County on her parent’s ranch, where she tended to the horse herd. She attended local school through the 8th grade then graduated from Isabel High School in 1934. She attended St. Joseph School of Nursing in Pierre for 1 year.
On July 13, 1936 she married Newton Franklin (NF) Red Lyon at Bison, SD. In 1941 Margaret and Red purchased a ranch east of Coal Springs, SD where they raised their 7 children.
Margaret was a true pioneer of the prairie. Being raised by homesteaders, she lived through tough times which taught her to be determined, resourceful and to get by with what was available, sometimes that was very little.
Margaret had many talents, she was the go to person in the community for nursing or medical advice on anything, animal or human. She had a love for cooking and teaching that talent to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She could put a wonderful meal together for unexpected guest as if she knew they were coming. She had a lifelong quest for learning, she taught herself how to do many things such as type, take shorthand, sew and knit. She always had an interest in oil painting. Once again she taught herself and in the fall of 1991 she decided to take some painting classes at Northern State University.
Margaret was a founding member of Meadow Community Presbyterian Church, where she hosted church services in her home before there was a church building. She was a member until 2001 when she transferred to Spencer Memorial Presbyterian, Lemmon SD. She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star joining in 1950.
Wanting a new challenge in life, Margaret and a friend bought the Granny’s Café in Faith which she operated for a few years. That meant she started her day early to drive the 43 miles to Faith and have pies baked by opening time.
In 1990 Red, her husband of 54 years passed away. Margaret remained on the ranch until April 1992 when she married Russell Reno. At this time she moved to Coeur d ‘Alene, ID, leaving the prairie that had been her home her whole life. In 2001 Russel passed away and Margaret moved back to the ranch. Even though Coeur d’Alene was beautiful, Margaret missed the wide open prairie. She later moved to an apartment in Lemmon and in 2008 to Five Counties Nursing Home.
All the things she did in life was led by her faith in Jesus Christ. She was kind and loving in all things. Her life resembled the Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”
She was preceded in death by her parents and both husbands; daughters Laska Schoenfelder, LuAnne Jordan; son Vivan Lyon; son-in-law, Mike Schoenfelder; grandsons Cody Lyon, Kevin Jordan; sisters, Patsy Monnens, Betty Everidge; brothers, James Tidball, Bill Tidball, Sam Tidball, and Keith Tidball.
She is survived by sons Jim (Joan) Lyon, Norman (Sue) Lyon, Ralph (Shari) Lyon; daughter Barbara (Tony) Lorenz; son-in-law Irving Jordan; daughter-in-law, Barbara Lyon; sister, Nora (Jim) Anderson; 23 grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; and 61 great great grandchildren.
