He grew up on the family ranch southwest of Isabel, SD, the youngest of the Rooster brothers. He attended grade school at the Wilson School and the Grondahl School. He attended Isabel High School and graduated in 1964. He then went to SDSU in Brookings, SD, graduating in 1968 with a degree in Biological Science.

Denver was very musically inclined and could play most instruments, playing by ear. He especially enjoyed playing the accordion, piano and the drums. The Rost band was formed by John, Kenny, Curtis and Denver. They played for many dances at the country schools in the area. Whenever there was a family gathering, you would find Denver playing the accordion so everyone could dance the night away. He was also a very good dancer and could polka or waltz with anyone.
Denver's pride and joy, his daughter, Heather was born July 1, 1978. He was a very devoted father that taught Heather how to fish, golf, play basketball and learn the drums. They also enjoyed playing and watching sports together, including some live football games during his visits to Colorado.
Denver was an avid Denver Broncos fan and enjoyed going to a few games. He loved most sports and enjoyed football, car racing, golf, fishing and rodeos, especially the NFR. He was also a volunteer for the Rapid City Police Auxiliary for a few years and he also loved to garden.
