Roger R. Shull

Roger R. Shull, 57, of Wall, South Dakota passed away unexpectedly on his ranch north of Wall on April 7, 2020. He was born August 18, 1962, the 8th of 9 children, to Clyde and Kathleen Shull in New Underwood, South Dakota. He lived his entire life in South Dakota with the majority being on his maternal grandparents’ homestead near Creighton.

He attended Pleasant Ridge country school until the middle of 6th grade when the school closed and then attended school in Wall. In 1981, he graduated from Wall High School and attended Mitchell Area Vo-Tech, graduating in 1983 with an Associate’s degree in Architectural Drafting and Building Construction. In the fall of 2018, Roger enrolled in the Veritatis Splendor Institute Catechist Certification Program (VSI). With the guidance of instructors as well as classmates, Roger’s relationship with Jesus was deeply strengthened.

He married in 1985; however, was divorced in 1988. Roger wrote: “From this union I received one thing that would remain important to me and others - “The chip dip recipe”. From 1984 through 1991 Roger lived in Rapid City and worked for Robbins & Sterns Lumber and Dunham Associates Consulting Engineering Firm. In the fall of 1991 Roger made the decision to move back to the Wall area to help his mother with his Grandma. Throughout the following years, Roger worked for lifelong friends Dave and Linda Lafee at the Corner Pantry; Estes Building Center/Wall Building Center, and most recently East Pennington County Conservation District. He was a dedicated and loyal employee to every employer. In 1998, with a lot of help from Morris and Andy Linn, Roger started his Angus cattle operation. In 2005 he retired and dedicated his life to his cattle operation. Roger’s philosophy was, “If you truly enjoy what you are doing, then it can’t be called work.” He felt that he had not worked a day on the ranch after retiring from his job in town.

Roger leaves behind his mother, Kathleen Shull of Wall; his siblings: Jean Hindman and Randy Vaughn of Newell, Tom Shull and wife Jackie of Wall, Roy Shull and wife Misty of Rapid City, Wayne Shull and wife Melanie of Wall, Tim Shull and wife Paula of Rapid City, Mary Shull-Sarti and husband Ricardo of Fort Collins, Colorado, Mike Shull and wife Melinda of Eugene, Oregon; and countless nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Roger was preceded in death by a brother, James, his father Clyde E Shull, Jr, and both maternal and paternal grandparents.

Roger will be remembered for his love and compassionate care of his mother. He deeply loved and supported his siblings, as well as his many nieces and nephews, cherishing all the time he shared with them. Roger was a selfless man, who committed his life to serving others, including many life-long friends, neighbors, his church and the community. He will especially be remembered for his long-time role as Santa Claus and a member of the chain gang for the Wall Eagles football program. Roger was a gifted artist and had a wicked sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by many!

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wall with Father Tony Grossenburg as celebrant. Interment followed at the Wall Cemetery.

Roger’s service was recorded and can be viewed on his obituary page at rushfuneralhome.com

A memorial has been established to the VSI Certification Program. Checks may be made payable to the Diocese of Rapid City and noted as “Roger Shull VSI Scholarship”.

Arrangements were with Rush Funeral Home of Wall.
