Phyllis was born May 13, 1927 in Perkins County, SD the daughter of Herbert O. and Marjorie M. (Hobaugh) Sandgren. She attended grade school in Perkins County SD and High School in Bison, SD and Ipswich, SD graduating in 1945. She later received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Northern State Teachers College (University) in Aberdeen, SD. She distinguished herself as a teacher and for over 40 years dedicated her life to teaching in rural grade schools in Perkins County SD. She retired from teaching in 1990.

After retirement Phyllis was dedicated to continue learning and sharing what she discovered. She loved reading, researching, attending and teaching Bible Study classes, handcraft hobbies, and visiting with friends and relatives. She was an active member of the Hettinger Assembly of God serving as a board member for many years. In 2006 she was chosen as the "Honored Lady of ND" for the ND Women's Ministries of the Assemblies of God. For many years she led Ladies Tea in her church each Thursday a.m. and taught Sunday School and Bible Studies. In addition she helped with the area Women's Aglow. Before her mother passed away she cared for her and worked at Graphic Designs and Printing with her niece Linda. She was a cancer survivor and, following major surgery and treatment, became cancer free until she passed away as the result of a stroke.

Phyllis dearly loved her family and delighted in all of her many nieces and nephews. She loved her church and had a growing relationship with her God. A devout Christian, having committed her life to Christ at an early age, she never waived from what she believed, and had the deepest respect from those who knew and loved her. On one occasion as a small child, following the death of a family member, she told her older brother if she could just get on top of the house she would be able to go to heaven. On February 10, 2016 she finally got to go to heaven.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Bud and George Sandgren, and her sister Shirley (Sandgren) Weaver.
