Norma Hopkins

Norma Jean Hopkins, age 90, of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Monday, August 13, 2018 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
 Norma Jean Hopkins was born November 7, 1927, to Louris and Louise (Jones) Johnston at the family homestead south of Belvidere, South Dakota. She attended grade school and high school in Kadoka. Norma attended beauty school in Watertown which is also where she met the love of her life Russell “Pete” Hopkins.
They were united in marriage on September 14, 1946 at Watertown, South Dakota and to this union were born four children: Jim, Bob, Jeanie, and Carolyn.
In January 1947 they moved to Kadoka, where he worked at People’s Market. In 1956, the family moved to Sioux Falls. In 1959, the family moved back to Kadoka where they purchased the Corner Grocery Store from Charles Mullin. They owned and operated Hopkins Economy Market from August 1959 to October 1975. They also owned and operated the Kadoka Sundries from 1975 to 1982. In 1983, they built the Hopkins Laundromat, which they operated until retiring in October 1994.
Norma was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka for many years. For 19 years Pete and she enjoyed travelling to Apache Junction, Arizona during the winter. The past ten years Norma has spent the winters in Nevada with her sons Jim and Bob.
Survivors include two sons James “Jim” Hopkins and Robert "Bob" Hopkins and his wife Sarah, all of Pahrump, Nevada; two daughters Jeanie Kok and her husband Tim of Whitewood, and Carolyn Trottier of Iron Mountain, Michigan; 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one brother Lloyd Johnston and his wife Teresa of Kadoka; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Norma was preceded in death by her husband Russell "Pete" Hopkins on February 18, 2002; her parents; one grandson David Hopkins; one great-grandson Andrew Briscoe; two brothers Lester and Leonard Johnston; and one sister Geraldine Siedler.
Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka.
Burial will take place at a later date at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Arrangements are with Rush Funeral Home of Kadoka.
