Martin N. Hertel

Martin N. Hertel, 91, of Sturgis, SD, died June 17, 2022, at his place of residence. By his request there will be no funeral, but spreading of his ashes on the old homestead east of McLaughlin, SD, today, Wednesday, August 24, 2022.
Martin was born March 13, 1931, in McLaughlin, SD, to Fred M. and Anna (Zimmerman) Hertel. He was one of 18 siblings. He worked on the farm until he left home at the age of 16, with a friend headed to Oregon. He finally ended up in Union City, California, where he worked for a steel mill till it closed down. Then he went to work for a Masonic Home. After he retired, he moved back to South Dakota to be closer to family.
Martin married Irene Minnie Carney on May 21, 1977, at the SunSet Wedding Chapel in Carson City, Nevada. Minnie passed away on October 12, 1995.
Martin loved to dance, play cards, and walk. He walked every morning to the Knuckle in Sturgis, SD, to have a cup of coffee, and in the afternoon to have what he called a glass of medicine (a beer).
Martin is survived by his brother, Lawrence of Sturgis, SD; half -brother, Timothy Hertel of McLaughlin, SD; three sisters-in-law, Elnor (Alfred), Mary (Lawrence), and Bernice (Willie); half-sister-in-law, Donna (Harvey); many nephews, nieces, greats, and great-greats.
Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; his parents, Fred and Anna; his step-mother, Hildegard (Billigmeiere-Dobler); five brothers, Leonard, Alfred, Raymond, Willie, and Lester; two sisters, Hertha, and DeLanis; four half-brothers, Harvey, Ronnie, Delray, and Stanley; three step-brothers, Lloyd, Lemore, and Leroy Dobler; two step-sisters, Jeanette Dobler-Jundt, and Shirley Dobler-Jerry.
