JB Hoffman

J B Hoffman, 65 of Belle Fourche passed away Monday, April 16 at the Spearfish Regional Hospital surrounded by his family.
He was born March 6, 1953 in Quinn, SD to Walter and Onalee (Lytle) Hoffman. J grew up on the Hoffman family homestead at the bottom of Mooney Hill, Creighton, SD.  He attended grade school at Pleasant Ridge and also the Lynn School at Elm Springs.  He graduated in 1971 from Wall High School and was the state heavy weight wrestling champion.
He married Mary Jo Kitterman in 1984 in Wall, SD.  He married Darlene Archuletta in 1994 in Willow, Alaska.  J became stepfather to 9 children.  His daughter Sarah was born to this union.
J ran a mechanic shop in Wall and Anchorage, Alaska.  While living in Alaska he was a test driver for Polaris and was a master on a snowmobile.  J was a wealth of knowledge and as one friend put it, “a monster of all things cool.”  Affectionately dubbed “Willow Billy” when living in the Alaska Wilderness.  He was a master craftsman and artisan.  J was a man’s man, a die-hard hot rodder, a picker and a visionary.   He loved walking the Cheyenne River looking for agates.  He called himself an “Antique Archeologist”.  Through his diverse interests in life and hunger for knowledge, he touched many lives and made deep lasting friendships with many.
His family meant everything to him.  In his last days he waited for his family to arrive and be with him.  J was a deeply spiritual man and shared God through his gentleness, passion and inventive verbal humor.  J joked about his own obituary and wanted it to say; “I lived, I loved and I left.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Onalee Hoffman; a step-son  Jahdiel Archuletta.
He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Hoffman and Fiance, Justin Thomas of Minneapolis, MN; stepdaughters, Johannah (Mark) Carter, Marantha Archuletta, Johannah Carter and Sarah Hoffman; stepsons, Israel Archuletta, Judah Archuletta, Zach Archuletta, Kaleb Archuletta, Jahdiel Archuletta, Jedidiah Archuletta, Daniel Archuletta; brother, Rodney Hoffman of Belle Fourche; sisters, Chris (Cliff) Crago, Dawn (Wilbur) Newland all of Belle Fourche and Cathy (Ted) Thompson of Whitewood; favorite son-in-law, Mark Carter; 13 grandchildren; nieces and nephews; cousin’s, Barb and Bev as very special friends and adventurers.
A Memorial service will be held Saturday, July 14 at 2:00 PM at the Lytle Ranch at Wasta, SD (roads are marked).  Following the service there will be a gathering and sharing of memories at the Wall City Park. (bring your own chairs and beverages)
