Jack Hansen

Jack Hansen, age 81, of Philip, South Dakota, died on Friday, July 26, 2019 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

John Vernon “Jack” Hansen was born January 27, 1938, in Philip, South Dakota, the son of Wallace “Bud” and Marie (Plasschaert) Hansen. He grew up and received his education in Philip graduating from Philip High School in 1956. He then went to work for Western Cattle Company near Philip.

Jack was united in marriage to Donna Waldron on May 24, 1957, in Philip. They made their home in Philip where Jack worked at various places including Philip Motor and Coyle’s Standard. In 1960 Jack worked for Fairmont Foods as a milkman for 13 years. In 1973 Jack purchased the Pit Stop gas station. In 1975 he started Hansen’s Hide and Fur which he continued for 20 years. Jack began his construction career in 1983 when he started Hansen’s Construction, building homes around the Philip area for nearly 15 years. During that time, Jack also started Hansen’s Spraying, continuing that until selling the business in 2006. It was then that Jack, along with his son Marty, began Hansen’s Fish Hatchery.

Jack was a member of the South Dakota National Guard, Philip Volunteer Fire Department, the Cancer Support Group, the United Church, and a school board member, all of Philip.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and most everything that took place outdoors. He loved the times he and Donna would travel all over the country, but he especially enjoyed the time he spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Jack never did anything he ever regretted…. (well maybe a couple of things). Jack and Donna spent over 40 years travelling in three different motor homes throughout the United States, Canada, and even made special trips to Alaska.

Survivors include three children Marty Hansen and his wife Debbie of Philip, Jesse Hansen and his wife Sheryl of Philip, and Vicki Schardin and her husband Brad of Marion, South Dakota; nine grandchildren Brandi Hirsch and her fiancé Derek Eisenbeisz, Keri (Jesse) Schiferl, Halli (Brett) Kavanaugh, Brady Hansen and his fiancé Teri Mayfield, Alyssa (Travis) Stauffacher, Micah (Jonathon) Hansen, Andrea (Alan) Flyger, Brock Schardin, and Cara Schardin; ten great-grandchildren Jada and Gavin Hirsh, Conner DeJong, Kyrik and Jackston Schiferl, baby girl Everly Kavanaugh, Ryne and Brayden Hansen, Shea, Taya, and Jade Flyger, and Graham and Tristan Stauffacher; one brother Bob Hansen and his wife LaVonne of Philip; two sisters Paula Poss and her husband Bill of Riverside, California, and Charlene Reed and her husband Sonny of Pierre; one sister-in-law Kaye Hansen of Stockton, California; his special friend Jan Hewitt of Philip; and a host of other relatives and friends.
