Gerald “Jerry” George Engelson

Jerry was born to Doug and Phyllis Engelson in Rapid City, SD during the “New Year’s Blizzard” of ’49. Weighing 3Lbs. 4oz. he began his life a fighter, in an incubator for 3 months. He grew up in Philip, SD, where he attended K-12 school. At a young age he developed a passion for sports, starting with Little League baseball and then high school football.
                After high school Jerry attended college at Black Hills State in Spearfish, SD where he received his Master’s in Education. He accepted his first teaching job in Wall, SD, followed by a year at Wanblee Indian School in Wanblee, SD. The next year he moved on to Moorcroft, WY.
                Jerry’s first year in Wyoming started off with a bang when he returned to Philip over Labor Day weekend and married his best friend Diane McGrath, on Sept. 2, 1977. They returned to Moorcroft, WY and started their family while Jerry taught high school and coached football and track. Jerry spent the next few years moving his growing family around while he taught in Geddes, SD, Marty, SD, and New Underwood, SD. In 1989 he moved his family one more time to Battle Mountain, NV where he taught 5th grade for 20 years.
                In 2014 Jerry became ill and in May of 2015 he received an LVAD, at this time Jerry and Diane moved to Reno, NV to be closer to his doctors. After a valiant fight Jerry lost his battle on June 15, 2018.
                Jerry enjoyed fishing and hunting and he really loved “hunting” for rocks. He would often say he never met a stranger and he could strike up a conversation with anyone.
                Jerry is survived by his wife Diane; his children, Brian (Samme) Engelson, Jerome (Katrina) Engelson, Teri (Chris) Spring; grandchildren  Breven and Maizee Engelson, Ryan, Kaylen, Macyn, and Elijah Engelson, and Mikey Spring; sister Linda (Merle) Stilwell; brother Jim (Gail) Engelsonl as well as many nieces and nephews.
                Jerry is preceded in death by his parents Doug and Phyl Engelson; sister Faye Engelson; in laws Howard and Elinor McGrath.
 
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday July 1st at 4pm at the Battle Mountain Civic Center located at 625 S .Broad Sr. Battle Mountain, NV.
