Eldora Kathleen (Mostad) Ogdahl was born August 5th, 1923 on a farm near Stronghold, Saskatchewan, Canada. In 1937, her father Gustav went to Prince Rupert, British Columbia to become a commercial fisherman. Her mother Tillie and the children remained on the farm until 1937, when they joined Gust in Prince Rupert.
Eldora attended Booth Memorial High, worked some odd jobs and attended Bible College. It was at a WWII USO event in Prince Rupert that she met Sgt Kermit Ogdahl, US Army, who was stationed nearby. He was undoubtedly taken in by her warm personality and keen sense of fashion and they married on September 4, 1945 in Baker Montana. They settled on a small plot of land east of Chance, SD where they farmed for nearly 20 years and had 7 children. In 1964, Kermit, Eldora and five of the children moved to Colorado. While living in the mountains in northern Colorado, Eldora was introduced to work in the shoe repair business and fell in love with it. In 1974, they returned to South Dakota with the two youngest children and settled in Bison. In 1978, Eldora’s dream came true when she opened Eldora’s Shoe Repair in the basement of their home, operating it for 7 years. In the years that followed, she was known to provide in home care for some local children and even had a very short stint in the school cafeteria before she was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration.
Eldora was very active in the community. A long-time member of the American Lutheran Church where she also taught Sunday School, in addition to involvement in the Quarrelsome Saints Circle, Town & Country FCE Homemaker’s Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Eldora was very well known for her baking, especially her breadsticks! She certainly had a way with breads and loved to share her baked delights. She received many awards over the years, but was especially proud of the West River Wheat Growers Bake and Take award when she was 80.
Although her physical abilities waned over time, leaving her blind, and in use of a walker, her positive attitude and sense of humor remained steadfast. She wishes each of you will remember some fun or funny moment as you celebrate her journey from her physical to eternal life.
Eldora was preceded in death by her husband Kermit in 1993 and one son, Oscar in 1962, brothers Burton and Randolph and one sister, Beatrice.
Surviving with the fondest of memories and blessed to have walked this life with such an amazing woman, her children: Sylvia Weishaar of Hettinger, ND; Dan Ogdahl of Bison, SD; Gloria Ogdahl of Franklin, NC; Stan Ogdahl of Bison, SD; Todd Ogdahl and wife Lynn of Port Orchard, WA and Beth Carrieri of Peyton, CO; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Her brother George and sister Bernice of Canada will miss her dearly. She will be remembered fondly by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, incredible friends and a beautiful community she considered her family.
Condolences may also be sent to the family at www.evansonjensenfuneralhome.com.
