Honoring those who have served so that we may have freedom

Veterans from all branches of the United States military were honored during the New Underwood School Veterans Day celebration Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Representatives from the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force were present to acknowledge the gratefulness of the community for their service and sacrifice.

Under the direction of Katie Albers, student council advisor, and Delayna Jensen, music teacher, the veterans and community members in attendance were treated to music by the New Underwood band as well as the elementary, middle school and high school bands. Three seventh grade students, Lexi Ballard, Avery Heinert and Jaimi McNutt, presented essays they had written on the impact veterans have had on their lives and on the country as a whole.

Lakeside native and New Underwood graduate Captain Mitch Nachtigall, currently the State Partnership Program coordinator for the South Dakota National Guard, delivered a message about the origins of Veterans Day and the commitment military men and women have for their country.
